Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water. . . I am amazed at how stupid we are sometimes. The lack of common sense just amazes me. With all of the crime that occurs in our society, we are now focusing on a new heinous crime. This crime is spreading across the United States like wild fire. I am sure it is a horribly dangerous crime too. It is a crime involving theft at the greatest level.
Kelly Williams-Bolar is a typical single parent. She is trying to do the best she can for her two children. She is pursuing a teaching license, but due to her arrest for the horrible crime that she did, her future licensing was in jeopardy. You might ask, what did she do that warranted two felony convictions giving her “10 days in jail, three years of probation, and 80 hours of community service?” She used her father’s address that allowed her children to go to a better public school than was available in the neighborhood where she lived. What a horrible crime.
I cannot believe how stupid this is. Williams-Bolar did get a break. Ohio Governor John Kasich reduced her charges from felonies to misdemeanors which will allow her to pursue her teaching license. This wouldn’t be so alarming, but for the fact that parents in Connecticut, Kentucky, and Missouri have also been arrested for “enrolling their children in better public schools outside of their districts.” This is another example of rather than fix the problem and produce better public education in all venues, we go after people who are trying to do what they can to work out a bad situation.
The failing public school systems of California, Massachusetts, and others are hiring special investigators to follow children from their schools to their homes to determine “if they belong in high-achieving public schools.” What is the reason? Parents that are working around the system are stealing, get this, free public education for their children.
What is especially horrible about this situation is the fact that this usually involves children in areas that are poor. Involved parents who recognize they must help in their child’s educational development, but cannot afford a private school or have no access to school vouchers, have few solutions available to them. Therefore they are “practicing civil disobedience.
Instead of prosecuting, maybe school officials should listen to parents. The importance of parents being involved is undeniable. Therefore, when the American Federation of Teachers took steps to undermine parental involvement in the school system, that proves something is wrong. There is a new idea called Parent Trigger. This process allows parents, when a school drops to a certain level of academic performance, to take action to help transform the failing school. This was too much for the control freaks in Connecticut who were members of the AFT. They were able to keep the parents “away from the table.” Instead of encouraging parents to be involved the AFT worked to keep the parents away. Seem counterproductive to me.
As a society we see true leadership disappearing at an incredible pace. The minority in charge won’t listen and intend to maintain status quo. They are missing opportunities to develop new and innovative ways of accomplishing the many actions needed in our society. This lack of true leadership is one reason why we are experiencing civil degeneration.
And that is my thought for the day!
